  • History: This is a significant fort, as it was the first English (later British) fortress built in India in 1639. Its construction by the British East India Company spurred further settlements and trade, eventually leading to the development of the city of Madras, now Chennai. It served as a crucial administrative, military, and commercial center for the British in South India for a long period. It even briefly fell under French control in the 18th century before being restored to the British. Today, it houses the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and other official buildings.  
  • Architecture: The fort's architecture showcases a blend of European and Indian styles. The massive granite ramparts reflect European medieval fortification, while the buildings within incorporate English Gothic, Classical, and Renaissance influences. You can also see local Indian motifs in some of the designs, representing a fusion of cultures. Notable structures within the fort include St. Mary's Church, the oldest Anglican church in India, and the Fort Museum, which houses a collection of colonial-era artifacts.
