Durgadi Fort, a historical landmark in Kalyan, near Mumbai, Maharashtra, stands on the banks of the Ulhas River. Its strategic location made it an important site throughout history.
History
- Early Origins: The fort's construction began during the reign of Shah Jahan and was completed in 1694 during Aurangzeb's rule. However, the area of Kalyan was a significant international harbor during the Satavahana era, indicating its historical importance long before the fort's construction in its current form.
- Maratha Influence: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj captured Kalyan in 1654 from Adilshah. Recognizing the importance of naval power, he built a fort near the creek as a naval dockyard, marking the beginning of the Maratha Navy. It is believed that while laying the foundation, a significant amount of wealth was discovered, leading to the fort being named Durgadi, after Goddess Durga.
- Temple Construction: After capturing Kalyan, the Marathas built a wooden temple dedicated to Goddess Durga within the fort, further solidifying its association with the name Durgadi Killa (Fort).
