Durgabhandar Fort is situated in the Nashik district of Maharashtra, nestled within the Brahmagiri mountain range near Trimbakeshwar. Often considered a sub-fort or a watchtower of the larger Brahmagiri fort, it holds historical and strategic significance for the region.
History:
- The fort's history is closely linked with Brahmagiri. While the exact construction period isn't definitively known, the construction style suggests it might date back to the Satavahana period. However, documented history traces back to the Yadav period (1271-1308).
- Over the centuries, Durgabhandar, along with Brahmagiri, has been under the rule of various dynasties, including the Bahmani Sultanate, the Nizamshahi, and the Mughals.
- A significant historical event occurred in 1752 when Trimbak Suryaji Prabhu, a warrior from the Peshwa camp, captured the fort, establishing Peshwa dominance in the area.
- In 1818, the British forces, led by McDowell, gained control of the fort.
