Dongri Fort, also known locally as Janjire Dhavari Fort or Irmitri Fort, is situated in the Dongri area of Mumbai, specifically within the Mira-Bhayandar municipality of Thane district, Maharashtra.
History:
The Dongri Fort's history dates back to when the Portuguese recognized the strategic importance of the area after the construction of the Vasai Fort. Initially, it served as a small, temporary station for soldiers. As the Portuguese expanded their control over the Northern Konkan region, they fortified the area, leading to the construction of Dongri Fort.
However, some accounts suggest the fort as it stands today was largely a British construction, built after they took over the region. The British may have fortified an existing Portuguese structure or built anew. In 1739, the fort came under Maratha rule.
