Chavand Fort, also known as Prasannagad, is a historic hill fort located in the Junnar Taluka of the Pune district in Maharashtra, India.
History
The fort's history dates back to the medieval period. Here's a glimpse into its past:
- Nizam Shahi Dynasty: In 1485, Malik Ahmed, the founder of the Nizam Shahi dynasty, acquired Chavand fort after the dissolution of the Bahmani Empire. It served as an important stronghold for the Nizam Shahis of Ahmednagar.
Bahadurshah, the grandson of the seventh Nizamshah, Burhanshah II, was imprisoned here in 1594. - Mughal Rule: In 1636, Shahaji Raje, the father of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, signed a treaty with the Mughals, resulting in the fort coming under Mughal control.
- Maratha Empire: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj recognized the strategic importance of Chavand and recaptured it.
He renamed it "Prasannagad," signifying a place of happiness or contentment. The fort played a crucial role in the Maratha defense strategy and expansion in the region. - Anglo-Maratha Wars: In 1818, the British East India Company captured Chavand Fort during their campaign to dismantle the Maratha Empire.
Like many other forts, Chavand faced destruction of its fortifications and approach routes by the British.
