Chandragad

 Chandragad, also known as Dhavalgad, is a hill fort located in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, approximately 182 km from Mumbai. Situated in the Sahyadri mountain range, this fort held strategic importance as it overlooked the Varandha Ghat trade route connecting Bhor to the Konkan region. The fort's surroundings are characterized by dense forests and steep hill slopes.   

History

The history of Chandragad dates back to the era of Chandrarao More, who built the Kangori fort in the Jawali valley to monitor trade routes. In 1656, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj captured Chandragad along with Kangori and Rayari forts. Recognizing its strategic value, Shivaji Maharaj renamed it "Gahangad" after some repairs. After the death of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the fort fell into the hands of Aurangzeb's commander, Itkadar Khan (also known as Zulfikar Khan), in 1689.
